Electric Bikes, Scooters & Safety

From the Algonquin Police Department - Parents: Please take a moment to review the rules with your children and help us keep Algonquin’s streets and paths safe for everyone. We want all residents—especially our young riders—to enjoy the summer responsibly.

The Algonquin Police Department takes these concerns seriously. Our local ordinance (Section 43.25) regulates the use of motorized and non-motorized recreational devices on Village property, sidewalks, and roadways. In short:

Non-motorized bikes and scooters are permitted on sidewalks in residential areas when operated safely and respectfully.
Motorized devices, such as e-bikes and electric scooters, are not allowed on sidewalks, parks, or Village-owned property without proper authorization.
Unsafe or disorderly operation of any device may result in enforcement—including citations and impoundment for repeat violations.

While our first priority is education, officers have been directed to proactively engage with riders and families to promote awareness and safety. However, when appropriate, citations will be issued.

As the weather warms up, the Village of Algonquin has seen a sharp rise in the use of electric bikes, scooters, and other motorized recreational devices—especially among youth. With that increase, we’ve also seen a growing number of community complaints regarding unsafe behavior, including:
